Roomvo alternative: what's covered, and what isn't

Roomvo's exact scope

Roomvo lists nine categories: flooring, tile, paint, exteriors, wallpaper, rugs, countertops, furnishings and wall decor. It works from a photo of the room uploaded by the shopper, with no 3D models to produce.

It's a serious, widely deployed solution, and within those categories it does its job very well. The question isn't its quality, it's its coverage.

The categories that aren't there

By contrast, none of these ranges falls within the nine stated categories:

• blinds, curtains, sheers, insect screens
• lighting : pendants, wall lights, floor lamps, ceiling fixtures
• wood and pellet stoves, fireplaces, inserts
• pergolas, shade sails, outdoor furniture
• internal glazed partitions, interior doors, room dividers
• mirrors, designer radiators, bathroom furniture

Why these categories are the hard ones

Most visualisers work by surface replacement: the tool detects a plane : a floor, a wall, and applies a texture to it. That's effective for tile or wallpaper, and completely inoperative for an object.

A blind sits inside an opening, with a drape, a translucency and a chain. A pendant hangs from a ceiling at a height that depends on the room. A stove occupies volume and casts a shadow. None of those cases is solved by pasting an image onto a plane.

The three families of solutions

• Surface replacement : needs textures to upload. Suited to floors, walls, paint, wallpaper.
• 3D configurator : needs a 3D model per SKU. Suited to furniture and contained catalogues.
• Generation from the product photo : needs a photo and dimensions. Suited to any object.

How to choose

If your catalogue is made of floors, tile or paint, the existing surface solutions will serve you very well. If your products are objects, all the more so if they're made to measure, the question to put to any vendor is simple: ask for a demonstration on your own SKUs, not on a demo catalogue. The difference shows up in a single image.
